History
On 11 February 2010 a group of enthusiastic Health and Safety Professionals of South Africa established the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh), this was on the historic day when South Africa celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. In 2013 Saiosh was recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as a professional body to register Occupational Health and Safety Professionals in South Africa in terms of the NQF Act, Act 67 of 2008. Saiosh is today the largest Occupational Health and Safety professional body in Africa and the leading source of information and networking opportunities within the Occupational Health and Safety profession in South Africa.
Objectives
Saiosh is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) which is committed to the prevention and reduction of work place incidents and accidents in South Africa. Saiosh is doing this by promoting Occupational Health and Safety Management and Practices among its members and stake holders at large.
Benefits
Saiosh is committed to the upgrading of the professional skills of its members by keeping them updated and informed on the latest developments in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Seminars and workshops on a wide range of Health and Safety topics are held on a regular basis for its members. Saiosh acts as a lobby group for Occupational Health and Safety legislation and standards and for this purpose interacts and liaises with the Department of Employment and Labour and other Government Bodies on behalf of its members.
Professionalism
Occupational Health and Safety Practitioners help to promote health and safety practices in the work place and are trained to recognise hazards related to health and safety, they understand how to assess the risks that might arise from these hazards and they know how to control these risks. Practitioners can demonstrate competence to employers, clients, customers or peers by registering as a member with Saiosh who will maintain a national register of all registered members.
Governance

Memorandum of Incorporation
The amended Saiosh Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI) was adopted by the members of the Institute, in accordance with section 16(1)(c) of the Companies Act, 2008 (‘the Act’), as evidenced by special resolution at the Saiosh Annual General Meeting held on 22 October 2018. The amended MOI supersedes the Saiosh Constitution Rev 27 October 2016.
