Robin W Jones

07 May 1943 - 13 June 2017

Tuesday 13th June 2017 was a very sad day for Occupational Health and Safety in South Africa.

Robin W Jones passed away on Tuesday morning at his home in Durban North, Durban, KwaZulu Natal. His sudden death came as a huge shock to family, friends and the Health and Safety community of South Africa.

Robin was a Founder Member, Director, Councillor, President and Immediate Past President of the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh).

Robin leaves behind a legacy and was one of South Africa's Leading Health and Safety Stalwarts. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to his wife Renay and his family.

       Robin W Jones
      1943 - 2017

Robin practiced in the field of Occupational Health and Safety for more than 40 years. He started as a Teacher and moved into Industrial Training. He persuaded the company where he worked to employ a Safety Officer and was given the additional job. Robin later dropped the Industrial Training part and specialised in Health and Safety. He was a Chartered Member of Saiosh (CMSaiosh) and a retired Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).

Although Robin retired from industry in 2003 he never stopped serving the Health and Safety Community, he continued with activities involving OHS Institutions and the development of OHS Professionals. In 2010, together with 6 other Founder Members, Robin took the lead in building the foundation for what we have today - The South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh).

On 30 May 2017 Robin handed over the Saiosh Presidency to Sanjay Munnoo and delivered a moving retirement speech to more than 200 delegates at the Gallager Convention Centre in Johannesburg. In his unique and humorous style Robin ended his speech with these words:

".... after 41 years I’ve decided to retire again. Saiosh is in good hands and as new Councillors take the place of those who leave I am confident that Saiosh will continue to grow and serve both the profession and the professionals. I’ve many quotations that members have heard me repeat over and over, but I think I’ll finish with two of my favourites:

It takes a lot for management to understand and appreciate what we (Safety Professionals) do. Therefore, lesson number one is that you should be like a “Bop Bag” You’ve all seen this children’s toy – it could look like a clown or a rag doll. Essentially it is an inflatable toy weighted in the bottom with sand. The child “knocks” the “bag” over but it springs right back upright. Eventually the child tires and gives up. When it comes to management they might knock us down but we keep bouncing back. In the adult scenario management eventually give up and start paying attention to what you say!

The second lesson is about Enthusiasm. I call it the Measles Syndrome! It means that if you haven’t got it (enthusiastic about safety) you can’t give it to anyone else!!!!!

*Tribute to Robin Jones

Saiosh Member number 1,

You were there when it all begun.

Always sharing your tales of fun.

As everything you did was a homerun.

You will never be truly gone,

As in Saiosh you will forever live on.

Thank you for always having our back,

Even if we went a little off track.

Robin Jones, our immediate past President,

Heaven has gained an incredible new Resident.
