Call for industry support for TVET College courses

South Africa has a serious shortage of skills and the government has prioritised the growth of TVET Colleges as part of their strategy to address the skills shortages. Through the funding of students via the DHET, the national artisan development programme and the building of new TVET College campuses the government has shown their commitment to this sector of the post-school educational landscape.

Troupant’s role

Troupant Publishers, in partnership with Macmillan Education South Africa, develop materials for courses run at South African TVET Colleges. Our books, published as print and e books, are developed for NC(V) courses and Nated courses offered by colleges in the vocational and training space. We work with authors who have experience in the colleges to develop books in the engineering, business, tourism and educare spheres.

Colleges’ needs

In talking to lecturers and college administrators about the challenges of teaching in the TVET College environment we have identified that lecturers are desperate for additional teaching materials to engage students and to make the connection between the classroom theory and workplace reality. Our conversations with people in colleges and in business point to the need to prepare students better for the realities of the workplace – work-ready students are easier to integrate into the workplace. In response to these needs, Troupant have embarked on a project to produce lecturer support presentation material for all of our textbooks. The material will be embedded in PowerPoint presentations for the lecturer to use while teaching following the structure of the course material modules. We have already collected extensive diagrams and photographs to illustrate the concepts being taught, but we would like to include South African workplace videos to demonstrate concepts from the workplace and to give students a clearer idea of what to expect in the workplace.

Some lecturers, in well-resourced colleges, use international YouTube videos to supplement their teaching, but we would like to use locally-produced videos that show South African workplaces and that are populated by people working in our environment. In addition, the use of YouTube requires the classroom to have internet facilities and we know that many rural colleges do not have widespread access to the internet (or in some cases any access at all). We will deliver the PowerPoint presentations by DVD or on a memory card and make them available for download, ensuring that whatever the level of digital access the college has, we cater for them.

How you can get involved

We are looking for industry players who appreciate the importance of building skills in the TVET sector to work with us on developing video material relevant to the colleges or allowing us to use material they may have developed for in house training or marketing purposes to support skills development in the colleges.
We are looking for material on engineering, business, public administration, tourism and educare.
