President's Message - July 2014

I would like to start by thanking those members who wrote in with positive comments about the “rebirth” of our newsletter. There were no negative comments but we would welcome constructive comments just the same.

FREE CPD Breakfast Workshops

We’ve launched our planned Breakfast Workshops, which will be held at, roughly, quarterly intervals. The first workshop was in Bloemfontein where members listened to the presentation on the New Construction Regulations and the requirements for Registration with the SACPCMP. This was delivered by Neels Nortje, our Registrar, who is the Health and Safety Manager for Master Builders KZN. He is appointed by the Minister of Labour as a member of the Minister's Advisory Council for OHS (ACOHS) and has been accepted by the SACPCMP to be registered as Pr. CHS Agent.

The next stop was Cape Town where we repeated the presentation, this time done by Deon Bester, the OHS Manager for the MBA Western Cape. We moved to Gauteng where members listened to Doug Michell, who is the Health and Safety Manager for the MBA North Region. Doug is a Registered Construction Health and Safety Manager with SACPCMP and has just been inaugurated as a SACPCMP Council Member. He served on the task team that developed the SACPCMP Construction Health and Safety process.

Durban has not been left out, a separate Workshop was held in Durban on the topics before we launched the National Workshops. So, in the very first round of Workshops we have had the opportunity to meet and present to over 275 members. And remember, members who attends these Breakfast workshop earns a CPD points towards their CPD record profile.

You may be asking where is the next Breakfast Workshop? Other than the existing centres, where the members have indicated their need for regular workshops, your Council will consider anywhere where a sufficient number of members can register for such workshops. Depending on the area we need, as a rough guide, not less than 45 members for the workshop.

• Remember that the Breakfast Workshops are free for members. Non-members pay an applicable fee.
• Bookings are done via the easy online registration system.
• Corporate members can sponsor the workshops and display their banners and other advertising material.
• Please keep an eye on the “Calendar” on the homepage of our website for the details of the next workshops.
• See our home page for photos from the latest Breakfast Workshops.

OHS Conference

In my last letter I glossed over the National Conference which was held at Gallagher Conference Centre alongside the OSH Africa exhibition. We had 300 delegates who attended over the two days and next year we expect to increase that to over 500 for the conference. More details on this will follow once the planning committee starts its work.

Marketing and Exposure

At the Bloemfontein Breakfast Workshop the reporters for both the Volksblad and Die Beeld Business news reported on the meeting and the topic. If I had to make a guess I would say that in addition to the delegates at the workshop the message went out to over 6000 people (conservatively) in the Bloemfontein area.

I represented Saiosh at a Gala Function held in Gauteng towards the end of June, where we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the SACPCMP. The broad purpose of the MOU is to agree to support the work done by each body, in the interest of Occupational Health and Safety and jointly contribute to bringing the national accident rate down along with a number of other bodies.

Membership Renewals 2014

According to the Constitution members who don’t pay their annual subscription by the 28 of February will be struck off the register. In complying with the SAQA requirements the same rule applies to members who are registered with the Professional Body namely IOSH SA. We have applied a very generous approach to this situation and given member’s invoices, notices and reminders that their membership and/or Professional Status are about to lapse as the due date is now passed. Members, who believe that they might be in this predicament, need to sign in and check their status on their profiles. Invoices can also be downloaded directly from the profiles.

Online Membership Programme

Since the launch of our membership online programme we’ve had more than 5000 sign-ins. If you have not yet signed in and explored our membership online programme do so today! Members are urged to sign in and update their profiles / contact details and upload their highest OHS qualifications. This information is submitted to SAQA every 6 month and is linked to member’s professional registration with SAQA. Don’t forget about the online “Career Portal” where you can upload your CV and view or upload vacancies. The career portal can be found in the “About” drop down tab on the homepage of the website. The online programme also makes provision for members to easily upload CPD points, there is even a video tutorial to show you how to do it. Sign in today and connect with other members and share information.

Advance Notice

Subject to confirmation a little later, our next round of workshops later in the year is going to cover the Legal Compliance required for the OHSAct. Of course it will also cover the consequences, if we fail to comply with the requirements.

So, until next time, remember, Safety is for Sharing!

Safety regards,

Robin W Jones
