"Is there a place for Occupational Hygiene in the overall OHS picture"
You may have a factory with old fashioned machinery which uses asbestos pads on machine brakes. Or you install a new machine and the noise level is much higher than you expected. Perhaps on a night shift the operators complain that they can’t clearly watch the production process because the light levels are insufficient or cast shadows on the process.
How do you solve these problems and other associated hassles, (fumes, vibration; both machinery and operator exposure, ergonomics?) The answer is that you need an Occupational Hygienist to examine the workplace and make recommendations to management. Occupational Hygiene is a specialist profession and we need to understand more comprehensively how this aspect fits into our day to day management processes and responsibilities.
Professor Cas Badenhorst will answer the question "Is there a place for Occupational Hygiene in the overall OHS picture" on Day One, the 24th of May at Gallagher Estate.
