Private Higher Education Institutions to use Saiosh Graduate Members for Annual Health and Safety Audits
In terms of Regulation 12(2) of the Higher Education Act, 1997, (Act No.101 of 1997), Private Higher Education Institutions are required to submit an Occupational Health and Safety audit report for each site of delivery as evidence that it complies with all regulations relating to the Health and Safety of persons on its premises.
The Directorate has now issued a directive that the auditor issuing the report must be registered with the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh) which is recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as a professional body to register Occupational Health and Safety Professionals in South Africa.
The auditor must be registered as Graduate Member (GradSaiosh) and proof of registration must be attached to the Occupational Health and Safety report. The Directorate will accept reports issued by an auditor not registered with Saiosh for the 2015 cycle of reporting. However, for the 2016 cycle year of reporting as well as for Applications for Amendment to add sites, the auditor issuing the occupational health and safety audit report must be registered with Saiosh.
